Electives will open in MySchoolBucks.  You will only be able to see them in MSB once your student’s grade is open.   MSB will open approximately at 9 a.m. on each of the above days.

If your student is registered for either 7th Grade Spanish, Yearbook or Middle School Musical, do not select a B Day elective. If your student is registered for 8th Grade Spanish, do not select a A Day elective. If an elective is not listed in MSB, then the elective is sold out.

Making selections using a computer vs the app is typically easier.  If you are in MySchoolBucks and don’t see the electives options, please start with refreshing your browser or logging out and back into MSB to get the selections.

Signing 2 is an American sign language elective. You will continue your journey by connecting with the deaf community through cultural etiquette. Students will learn to introduce themselves to deaf people, fingerspelling, handedness, and the importance of facial expression to show emotion. Some highlights of Signing 2 include learning the alphabet, colors, numbers, animals, and conversation starters.

This Elective teaches students the fundamentals of stitching, embroidery techniques, and creative fabric design. Students will learn how to use different types of stitches, create intricate patterns, and complete a variety of projects, from simple repairs to decorative art. Midway, Cinderella Man, Pearl Harbor, War Horse: all entertaining movies, but how accurate are they? In this elective, you will watch American classics in addition to blockbusters with the goal of using the films to enrich the themes studied in social studies classes, as well as separating fact from fiction and history from Hollywood. All movies selected will serve to deepen your understanding of American or World history and enhance your ability to think more critically about Hollywood’s treatment of history. Students will vote on which movies to view and which themes to discuss. Some movies will be rated PG-13 and will need parental approval before viewing.

Students will learn the different speed stacking sequences for speed stacking competitions. They will practice and make goals to improve their times for each type of competition throughout the trimester. There will be a competition in the class at the end of the trimester. Students will also be taking cups to a few elementary classes to demonstrate a sequence and teach it to the students.

In this immersive class, students will journey through diverse theatrical traditions from various cultures and historical periods. From the classical dramas of Ancient Greece to the dynamic forms of Japanese Noh and Kabuki (we will make masks), the vibrant festivals of African storytelling, and the colorful dances of Indian Kathakali, this course offers a deep dive into the global tapestry of performance art. Students will explore the unique techniques, storytelling styles, and cultural significance of each tradition while examining the universal themes that connect them. Through interactive activities, script readings, creative projects, and performance exercises, students will not only gain an appreciation for different cultures but also discover how these traditions influence modern theater. This class encourages students to broaden their understanding of storytelling, develop empathy, and embrace the artistic diversity that shapes the world of theater.  No previous theater experience is required, just a curiosity to explore and celebrate how the art of theater unites us all!

In Book Sisters, middle school girls will come together to read and discuss powerful stories featuring strong, resilient female characters. Each book selection will highlight themes of self-discovery, courage, and empowerment. From titles like Pictures of Hollis Woods by Patricia Reilly Giff to The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise by Dan Gemeinhart, students will explore a variety of girl-centered narratives that inspire personal growth, empathy, and perseverance. Throughout the course, participants will engage in group discussions, creative activities, and reflective writing that delve into the journeys of these characters and their relevance to their own lives.

In this elective, students will help plan and promote the Kids Heart Challenge that BFA will be participating in through the American Heart Association. They will also help educate students about healthy living and heart health, learn and teach hands-only CPR to younger grades, plan an assembly and/or classroom visits to talk about why our school is participating in the challenge and what funds are being raised for, help distribute student prizes, assist during the day of the event, and more. This is a great opportunity for students to learn leadership skills while serving the BFA community.

Perform in the middle school musical! Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family members how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it.”

There are roles for performers that want to sing solos and performers that do not! All dancers and non-dancers welcome!

Learn to solve and create works of art in The Rubik’s® Cube elective and solve complex puzzles! In this class you’ll learn to solve puzzles and cubes with friends and create your own Rubik’s Cube mosaics through peer collaboration. Using over 100 Rubik’s Cubes, students will create mosaics using templates provided as well as templates they create on their own. They will learn how to solve only one side of the Rubik’s Cube to create mosaics and learn how to solve all six sides in record time!

Students work with the Jostens Yearbook software to create the 2023-2024 Ben Franklin Academy yearbook. Students are responsible for taking pictures, creating layouts, and editing the book. There is an application process for yearbook, and space is limited. This elective is two trimesters long.
